Deuteronomy 31 — Moses says goodbye, Joshua steps up, and God tells the truth about what comes next

This is the end of a forty-year road, and everyone knows it. — the man who stared down , who split the , who carried an entire nation on his back through the wilderness — is standing in front of for the last time. He's 120 years old. He won't the . He knows it. They know it.

What follows is one of the most honest goodbye speeches in all of . Moses doesn't sugarcoat anything. He hands the reins to , makes arrangements for the future, and then — with a kind of heartbreaking clarity — tells the people exactly what he knows they'll do the moment he's gone. It's raw, it's heavy, and it reads like a who his kids deeply but has no illusions about their choices.
gathered the whole nation and said what everyone already felt but nobody wanted to hear. He spoke plainly:
"I'm 120 years old today. I can't lead you anymore — I don't have it in me. And the Lord has been direct with me: 'You will not cross this Jordan.'
But here's what matters — the Lord your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will drive out these nations. He will clear the path. And Joshua will lead you, just as God has promised. The Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og, the Amorite kings, when he destroyed them completely. He'll hand them over to you, and you'll deal with them exactly as I've commanded.
Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid of them — not even a little. Because the Lord your God is the one going with you. He will not leave you. He will not abandon you."
Think about the weight of that moment. The only leader this generation had ever known was stepping aside — and his final message wasn't "good luck." It was "the one who actually matters isn't going anywhere." Moses had always been the middleman. Now he was pointing them past himself to the one who had been doing the real work all along. Every leadership transition comes down to this question: Is your confidence in the person at the front, or in the God behind them?
Then called forward — not in a private tent, not behind closed doors — but right there in front of everyone. The whole nation watching. And he said to him:
"Be strong and courageous. You are going to lead this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors. You will give them their inheritance. It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not leave you or abandon you. Do not be afraid. Do not lose heart."
Moses told Joshua the same thing he'd just told the nation — because Joshua needed to hear it just as much. Maybe more. There's a difference between being chosen for something and feeling ready for it. Joshua had watched Moses carry this burden for decades. Now it was his turn. And the reassurance wasn't "you're capable enough." It was "God goes first." That's the only thing that makes any impossible assignment survivable.

"Every seven years, during the year of release, at the Feast of Booths — when all of Israel gathers before the Lord your God at the place he chooses — you must read this entire Law out loud. All of it. In front of everyone.
Assemble everyone — men, women, children, and the foreigners living among you — so they can hear it, learn it, and learn to honor the Lord your God. So they'll follow through on everything written in it. And so their children — the ones who haven't heard it yet — can learn it too. For as long as you live in the land you're crossing the Jordan to possess."
Every seven years. Not optional. Not for scholars only. Everyone — including the kids, including the immigrants. Moses understood something we still struggle with: truth doesn't transmit automatically. Every generation has to hear it for themselves. You can't coast on your parents' . You can't assume the next generation will just pick it up. It has to be spoken out loud, in community, on repeat. That's not legalism — that's how things stay alive.
This is where the chapter gets heavy. And it stays heavy.
The Lord said to :
"The time has come for you to die. Bring Joshua and present yourselves at the Tent of Meeting. I'm going to commission him."
So Moses and went to the . And the Lord appeared in a that stood over the entrance. Then God said something devastating — not to Joshua, but to Moses:
"You are about to die. And after you're gone, this people will rise up and chase after the foreign gods of the land they're entering. They will abandon me. They will break the Covenant I made with them.
When that happens, my anger will burn against them. I will turn away from them. I will hide my face. They will be consumed. Disaster after disaster will hit them, and they'll finally say, 'Isn't this happening because our God is no longer with us?'
And I will hide my face from them — because of everything they have done. Because they turned to other gods."
Let that sink in. God is describing — in detail — how the people he rescued, fed, protected, and led for forty years will betray him the moment things get comfortable. And he's telling Moses this while Moses is about to die. There's no pretending here. No optimistic spin. God sees what's coming and he says it plainly. The hardest part? They'll eventually realize what they lost, but only after the consequences arrive. That pattern — comfort, drift, consequences, regret — is as old as humanity and as current as this week.
But God didn't just predict the failure. He built something into the culture that would outlast the failure. He told :
"Write a song and teach it to the people of Israel. Put it in their mouths. This song will serve as my witness against them. Because when I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey — the land I swore to their ancestors — and they eat their fill and get comfortable, they will turn to other gods. They'll serve them. They'll despise me. They'll break my Covenant.
And when disaster comes crashing down, this song will confront them as a witness. It won't be forgotten. Their descendants will still know the words. Because I already know what they're inclined to do — even now, before I've brought them into the land."
Moses wrote the song that very day and taught it to the people. Then the Lord turned to directly and commissioned him:
"Be strong and courageous. You will bring the people of Israel into the land I promised them. And I will be with you."
There's something remarkable about God's strategy here. He didn't write another set of rules. He wrote a song. Because songs get stuck in your head. Songs survive when scrolls get lost. Songs get passed from parent to child without a formal education system. God knew they would forget the rules. So he gave them something they couldn't forget — a melody that would haunt them with the truth long after they stopped wanting to hear it.
When had finished writing down every word of — all the way to the end — he gave one final instruction to the who carried the :
"Take this Book of The Law and place it beside the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God. It will remain there as a witness against you.
Because I know you. I know how rebellious and stubborn you are. While I'm still alive, standing right here, you've been rebellious against the Lord. How much worse will it be after I'm dead?
Gather every elder and officer from your tribes. I need to speak these words directly to them — and call heaven and earth as witnesses.
Because I know — after I die, you will turn away. You will corrupt yourselves. You will abandon the path I've laid out for you. And in the days ahead, disaster will find you. Because you will do what is evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him with everything you've built with your own hands."
Then Moses stood before the entire assembly of and spoke the words of his song from beginning to end.
There's no softening this. Moses' last act as leader wasn't a victory lap. It was a warning delivered with tears in his eyes and zero illusions. He had watched these people complain, rebel, doubt, and wander for forty years — and he loved them anyway. But doesn't pretend. He called and earth as witnesses because he knew the people wouldn't be reliable ones. And the book he placed beside the ark wasn't just a legal document. It was evidence. A record of everything God had said and done — sitting right next to the symbol of God's presence — waiting for the day they'd need to find their way back.
