Then something remarkable happened. and — the two brothers with all the complicated history between them — came together to bury their . They laid him to in the cave of Machpelah, the field Abraham had purchased from the , east of Mamre. was already there. Now Abraham rested beside her.

Even from birth, he was reaching for what his brother had.

As the boys grew up, they couldn't have been more different. was an outdoorsman — a skilled hunter, rugged, at home in the wild. was quiet, preferring to stay close to the tents. Here's what makes this scene so unsettling. It wasn't that Esau lost something. He gave it away. Voluntarily. For a bowl of soup. He looked at an incredibly valuable thing he had — his birthright, his future, the Promise of God running through his family — and decided a meal mattered more. Not because he was . Because he couldn't see past the next five minutes.
