It's one of those chapters where you can feel the gap between who Jesus is and what the people closest to him are able to understand. The . The frustration. The patience. And a father's that cuts right to the bone.
A Promise Nobody Fully Understood ⚡
Right before the scene shifts, dropped a statement that would have made everyone lean in:
"I'm telling you the truth — some of you standing here right now will not die before you see the Kingdom of God arrive in power."
That's a bold claim. And depending on who you ask, it pointed to the , to , or to what was about to happen on the mountain just six days later. Either way, Jesus was saying: this isn't some distant future. The is closer than you think.

The Conversation Coming Down ❓
As they came back down the mountain, gave them strict instructions:
"Don't tell anyone what you just saw — not until the Son of Man has risen from the dead."
They kept it to themselves, but tells us they were quietly debating among themselves what "rising from the dead" could possibly mean. They'd just watched Jesus glow like the sun, and they still couldn't process what was coming next.
Then they asked him something that had been bothering them:
"Why do the Scribes say Elijah has to come first?"
Jesus answered them directly:
"Elijah does come first to restore everything. But think about this — if Elijah comes to prepare the way, what does Scripture say happens to the Son of Man after that? Suffering. Contempt. And I'm telling you: Elijah has already come. They did whatever they wanted to him — exactly as it was written."
He was talking about . The forerunner had already arrived. They'd already killed him. And if that's what they did to the one who prepared the way, what did that say about what was coming for Jesus himself? The heard the words. They just weren't ready to put it together.
The Scene at the Bottom of the Mountain 🌪️
When they reached the other , it was chaos. A crowd had gathered. were arguing with the disciples. Everyone was worked up. The moment the crowd spotted , they came running:
Jesus asked them, "What's the argument about?"
A father stepped forward from the crowd, and you can hear the exhaustion in his voice:
"Teacher, I brought my son to you. He has a spirit that won't let him speak. Whenever it takes hold of him, it throws him to the ground — he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, goes completely rigid. I asked your disciples to drive it out, and they couldn't do it."
Jesus' response landed on everyone:
"How long do I have to be with you? How long do I have to put up with this? Bring him to me."
There's real frustration in that — not at the father, but at the faithlessness surrounding the situation. The disciples had been given authority. They'd cast out before. But something had gone wrong. And in the middle of it all, a father and his son were suffering while religious people argued about it.
They brought the boy. And the moment the spirit saw , it threw the boy into a violent seizure — convulsing on the ground, foaming at the mouth. Jesus turned to the father:
"How long has this been happening?"
The father answered:
"Since he was a child. It's thrown him into fire and into water — it's trying to destroy him. But if you can do anything — please, have compassion on us. Help us."
Catch that word. Us. Not just "help my son." Help us. This father had been carrying this for years. And then Jesus zeroed in on two words:
"'If you can'? Everything is possible for the one who believes."
And the father — right there, in front of everyone — said it plainly:
"I believe. Help my unbelief."

The spirit screamed, threw the boy into a final convulsion, and left. The boy lay so still that most of the crowd thought he was dead. But Jesus took his hand, lifted him up, and the boy stood.

"This kind can only be driven out by prayer."

Silence. Nobody said a word. Because on the road — right after Jesus had told them he was going to die — they'd been arguing about which one of them was the greatest.
Let that land. He's talking about a . They're debating a crown. It would almost be funny if it wasn't so painfully human. We do this constantly — position ourselves, compare ourselves, measure ourselves against each other — while missing the thing that actually matters.
Jesus sat down, called the twelve close, and said:
"If anyone wants to be first, they must be last of all — and servant of all."
Then he did something unexpected. He brought a child into the middle of the group, picked the child up in his arms, and said:
"Whoever welcomes one child like this in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me isn't just welcoming me — they're welcoming the one who sent me."
In that culture, children had zero status. No influence. No platform. Nothing to offer you socially. And Jesus put a child at the center of the room and said: this is what greatness looks like. Not climbing. Serving. Not the person everyone notices — the person nobody does.
It's Not About Your Team 🤝

"Teacher, we saw someone casting out Demons in your name — and we tried to stop him, because he wasn't part of our group."

"Don't stop him. Nobody who does a mighty work in my name is going to turn around and speak against me. Whoever isn't against us is for us.
And truly — anyone who gives you even a cup of water because you belong to Christ will not lose their reward."
This is one of those moments that still challenges people today. The wanted to gatekeep. They wanted to control who was "in" and who was "out." And Jesus said: that's not your job. If someone is doing genuine good in my name, don't fight them because they're not in your circle. The is bigger than your group. Stop keeping score and start paying attention to where God is actually working — even if it's outside your walls.
The Weight of Influence ⚓
Here the tone shifts. wasn't being playful. He was being deadly serious. This is a passage that deserves to be read slowly:
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble — it would be better for them to have a massive millstone hung around their neck and be thrown into the sea.
If your hand leads you into Sin — cut it off. It's better to enter life with one hand than to go to Hell with two.
If your foot leads you into sin — cut it off. Better to enter life limping than to be thrown into hell with both feet.
If your eye leads you into sin — tear it out. Better to enter the Kingdom of God with one eye than to be thrown into hell with two — where the decay doesn't end and the fire doesn't go out."
Let me be real with you. Jesus used extreme language here because the stakes are extreme. He wasn't giving a literal surgical recommendation. He was saying: whatever is pulling you toward destruction, the cost of removing it is always less than the cost of keeping it. Always.
And notice where he started — with influence. Before he talked about personal , he talked about causing someone else to stumble. If you have any kind of influence over someone's faith — as a parent, a leader, a friend, an older believer — the weight of that is enormous. Protecting someone else's faith is not optional. Jesus treated it with complete seriousness, and so should we.
Salt and Peace 🧂
