Searching the royal archives at Ecbatana, Darius finds Cyrus's original decree authorizing the Jerusalem temple rebuild — and overrules its opponents.
When opponents of the Jerusalem temple rebuild challenged its legality, the governor Tattenai wrote to King Darius asking him to search the royal records for any decree of Cyrus authorizing the work. The search was conducted in the Babylonian archives without success. But at Ecbatana, in the Median fortress where Cyrus had spent the summer, a scroll was found containing the original decree. Darius not only confirmed the decree but ordered Tattenai to fund the rebuild from royal revenue and threatened any opposition with execution. The temple was completed in the sixth year of Darius's reign (Ezra 6:14-15).
Two prophets light a fire under the people to restart the Temple rebuild. When local officials show up demanding to know who authorized the project, God's protection keeps the work going — and a letter to King Darius puts everything on the line.
EzraThe Receipts Were FoundKing Darius digs through the royal archives, finds the original decree authorizing the Temple rebuild, and doesn't just confirm it — he funds it. The Temple gets finished, and Israel throws its first Passover back home.
