After landing in Italy at Puteoli Paul marches north under guard along the great Appian Way — and Roman Christians come south to meet him at the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns where Paul "thanked God and took courage" before his final approach to Rome.
Acts 28:11-16 records the final stages of Paul's prisoner-journey to Rome. After landing at Puteoli (modern Pozzuoli), Paul spent seven days with Christian brothers there before marching north under Roman guard along the great Appian Way: "And so we went toward Rome. And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage" (Acts 28:14-15). The two named meeting points (43 and 33 miles from Rome) are the southernmost reach of the imperial Christian community.
