Pharaoh Akhenaten abolishes Egypt's traditional gods and declares the sun disk Aten as the one true deity — history's first known attempt at state-enforced monotheism.
In a move that shocks the entire ancient world, Akhenaten closes the temples of Amun and the other traditional gods, redirecting all worship to the Aten, a single solar deity. He abandons Thebes and builds an entirely new capital city, Akhetaten, in the desert. Whether this represents genuine theological conviction or a political power grab against the priesthood of Amun remains one of ancient history's great debates.
