Crown prince Nebuchadnezzar crushes the Egyptian army at Carchemish, making Babylon the undisputed superpower of the ancient Near East.
In 605 BCE, the Babylonian army under crown prince Nebuchadnezzar II decisively defeated the Egyptians and remnants of the Assyrian army at Carchemish on the Euphrates River. The victory gave Babylon control of the entire Levant, including Judah. Nebuchadnezzar had to rush home when his father Nabopolassar died, but quickly returned to claim tribute from the western kingdoms. The Babylonian Chronicle provides a detailed account of the battle.
