After Ramesses III, Egypt entered a long decline marked by weak pharaohs, corruption, and the eventual split of the kingdom.
The later Ramessides (Ramesses IV through XI) presided over a shrinking empire, tomb robberies, worker strikes, and growing power among the priesthood of Amun at Thebes. By the end of the 20th Dynasty around 1070 BCE, Egypt had lost its Levantine territories and split into rival northern and southern power centers.
