The warrior civilization that inspired Homer's epics collapsed around 1100 BCE, plunging Greece into a dark age that lasted centuries.
The great Mycenaean palace centers at Mycenae, Tiryns, and Pylos were destroyed or abandoned within a generation. Writing disappeared from Greece, trade networks shattered, and population levels plummeted. This period — sometimes called the Greek Dark Ages — lasted until around 800 BCE, when Greek civilization re-emerged in a dramatically different form.
