A fortified border town on the Arnon gorge — the southern marker of Reuben's territory
East of JordanHistorically Verified
The site is identified with the modern Jordanian village of Ara'ir on the rim of the Wadi Mujib gorge. Excavations uncovered Iron Age fortifications, and the Mesha Stele — a 9th-century BCE Moabite inscription — explicitly names Aroer.
A fortified town perched on the northern rim of the Arnon River gorge, marking the southern boundary of the Amorite kingdom of Sihon — and later the Israelite territory of Reuben. Joshua's allotment to Reuben begins at Aroer (Joshua 13:9, 16). Jephthah's famous diplomatic letter to the Ammonite king recalls Israel's conquest from the Arnon at Aroer northward (Judges 11:26). David sent plunder from his Amalekite victory to the elders of (a different) Aroer in Judah (1 Samuel 30:28). Centuries later, both Isaiah and Jeremiah pronounced doom on Aroer's cities, foretelling abandonment to flocks (Isaiah 17:2; Jeremiah 48:19).
