The northernmost limit of Joshuas conquest — at the foot of Mount Hermon in the valley of Lebanon
LebanonBaal-gad ("lord of fortune," named for the Canaanite god of fortune Gad) marked the northernmost limit of Joshua's conquest of Canaan. "So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord had spoken to Moses... from Mount Halak that rises toward Seir as far as Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon" (Joshua 11:17, 12:7). The valley of Lebanon — likely the Beqaa Valley between the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon ranges — is named as the northwest boundary of the unconquered territory still remaining "from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath" (Joshua 13:5). The site is generally identified with Hasbaya or nearby at the southern foot of Mount Hermon in modern Lebanon.
