An alternative ancient name for Kiriath-jearim — where the Ark of the Covenant rested for twenty years after being returned by the Philistines
JudeaBaalah ("mistress" or "lady") was an ancient Canaanite name for the town of Kiriath-jearim, also called Kiriath-baal, on the border of Judah and Benjamin in the western Judean hills. Joshua's boundary description traces the line from Baalah "to Mount Seir, and along the side of Mount Jearim... and from there to Beth-shemesh" (Joshua 15:9-11). Most significantly, this is where the Ark of the Covenant rested for twenty years after the Philistines returned it: "the men of Kiriath-jearim came and brought up the ark of the Lord, and brought it to the house of Abinadab on the hill" (1 Samuel 7:1). David later came specifically to "Baalah of Judah, that is, Kiriath-jearim, to bring up from there the ark of God" (1 Chronicles 13:6). Generally identified with Deir el-Azhar / Kiryat Ye'arim, about 14 km west of Jerusalem.
