The Herodian fortress where John the Baptist was imprisoned and beheaded
East of JordanHistorically Verified
The Herodian fortress has been dug up east of the Dead Sea. The historian Josephus specifically named this as where John the Baptist was killed.
A fortified hilltop palace east of the Dead Sea, built by the Hasmoneans and later rebuilt by Herod the Great. According to the Jewish historian Josephus, this is where Herod Antipas imprisoned and beheaded John the Baptist (Antiquities 18.5.2). The Gospels record that Herod had John arrested for condemning his marriage to Herodias, and that Herodias's daughter danced at a banquet, leading to John's execution (Mark 6:17-29).
