The first place Israel camped after crossing the Red Sea — where the bitter water became sweet through Moses's wood
Wilderness of ShurHistorically Verified
Traditional identification with Ain Hawarah on the western Sinai coast, matching the three-day journey from the Red Sea crossing
Three days into the Sinai wilderness after the Red Sea crossing, the Israelites came to Mara and found its waters too bitter to drink. The people grumbled at Moses, who cried out to the Lord. The Lord showed him a piece of wood, which Moses threw into the water and it became drinkable. There the Lord made a statute for them and tested them, declaring himself "the Lord who heals you." Numbers 33:8-9 lists Mara as the wilderness stop just before Elim.
