A harbor on the south coast of Crete that Paul's ship tried to reach for winter before the storm scattered them toward Malta
CreteHistorically Verified
Modern Loutro harbor; ancient anchorage matching Luke's description of a winter-safe port facing southwest and northwest
Acts 27:12 records that the centurion and ship's officers wanted to put in at Phoenix to spend the winter, since Fair Havens was unsuitable. Phoenix was reportedly a harbor on the south coast of Crete facing both southwest and northwest. Before they could reach it, a violent northeaster swept the ship past Cauda and out across the Mediterranean, eventually wrecking it on Malta. The harbor was likely at modern Loutro on the southern Cretan coast.
