A fortress city east of the Jordan where Ahab died in battle and Elisha later had Jehu anointed king
East of JordanHistorically Verified
Excavated in the 1960s on the Jordanian side of the river. Iron Age fortifications matching the biblical period have been found at the site.
A Levitical city of refuge in the territory of Gad, east of the Jordan in the highlands of Gilead. It was a strategic frontier fortress facing the Arameans of Damascus. King Ahab of Israel partnered with King Jehoshaphat of Judah here in a disastrous campaign to retake the city from Aram — Ahab was killed when a stray arrow found him through the joints of his armor (1 Kings 22). Years later this is where Elisha sent a young prophet to anoint Jehu as king of Israel, kicking off the bloody purge of Ahab's dynasty (2 Kings 9). Joram was wounded fighting here and recovering at Jezreel when Jehu ambushed him.
