Psalms is the largest book in the Bible — 150 individual poems and songs that together form the official worship manual of ancient . Who Wrote Psalms?
Psalms is not the work of a single author but an anthology compiled over roughly a thousand years. The psalm headings attribute about 73 psalms to David, the shepherd-king whose passionate relationship with God shaped Israelite worship for generations. Asaph, the chief musician of the Jerusalem temple, is credited with 12 psalms. The Sons of Korah — a guild of Levitical singers — contributed 11. Moses is named in Psalm 90, making it among the oldest material in the collection. Solomon appears twice. Many psalms carry no attribution at all.
This long authorship history means the Psalms were gathered and shaped over centuries, reaching something close to their current form during or after the Babylonian exile. Think of it less like a single composed work and more like a carefully curated hymnbook built over generations.
The Five Books
The Psalms are arranged into five smaller collections — often called "books" — each ending with a formal doxology. Scholars widely believe this structure mirrors the five books of the Torah, presenting the Psalms as a kind of poetic counterpart to the Law of Moses. The arrangement isn't strictly chronological or thematic; it's liturgical, shaped by how these songs were actually used in temple worship.
What Kind of Writing Is This? {v:Psalm 22:1-2}
The dominant form is Hebrew poetry, which works not through rhyme but through parallelism — ideas echoing, contrasting, or building on each other in paired lines. Understanding this helps readers catch what might otherwise look like repetition.
The largest single category within the collection is the lament — psalms that cry out to God in pain, confusion, or abandonment. Psalm 22 opens with a line that will be spoken again from the cross:
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?
That the Bible devotes so much space to honest anguish directed at God is itself a theological statement: raw honesty in prayer is not faithlessness. It is, in fact, the posture of the most faithful people in the story.

Torah and wisdom. The collection opens with Psalm 1, a meditation on the man who delights in God's law — framing everything that follows as an invitation to a certain kind of life.
Covenant relationship. The Psalms are saturated with the assumption that God and Israel are bound together in a relationship of loyalty and love. Even the laments are cries from within that relationship, not departures from it.
Kingship — human and divine. The royal psalms celebrate the Davidic king as God's appointed ruler. But several of them reach beyond any earthly king toward someone greater. Psalm 2, Psalm 45, and Psalm 110 were understood by early Christians as pointing forward to Jesus — and Jesus himself quoted and applied them that way.
Praise as the destination. The emotional arc of the Psalms, especially across the five-book structure, moves from lament toward praise. Grief is real and honored, but the collection doesn't leave you there.
Why It Matters
The Psalms were the prayer book of the early church just as they had been for Israel. Paul quotes them extensively. The Gospel writers reach for them at every major turning point in Jesus's life, passion, and resurrection. Early Christians memorized them; monks chanted through the entire Psalter weekly.
