The Lord's is the model prayer that gave his disciples when they asked him to teach them to pray. Recorded in Matthew 6:9–13 and Luke 11:2–4, it offers a brief but remarkably complete framework for how humans can approach God — covering worship, submission, provision, forgiveness, and protection. Across two thousand years of Christian history, it has been prayed in every language on earth.
The Context {v:Matthew 6:5-8}
Jesus introduced the prayer as a corrective to two common prayer pitfalls: performing prayer publicly to be seen, and piling up hollow repetition to sound impressive. The Lord's Prayer is not a magic formula but a pattern — a shape to follow rather than a script to recite mechanically. The goal is honest communication with God, not a performance for anyone watching.
The Opening: Who We Are Addressing {v:Matthew 6:9}
The prayer begins with "Our Father in heaven." This opening does two things simultaneously. It establishes intimacy — God is addressed as Father, not distant sovereign — and it establishes reverence: "in heaven" signals that this is no ordinary relationship. The word "our" also reminds us that prayer is never purely private. We come before God as part of a community, not only as isolated individuals.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
"Hallowed be your name" means: may your name be treated as holy, may your character be honored, may people revere who you actually are. It is an act of worship before any request is made — a reminder that prayer begins with God, not with us.
God's Agenda Before Our Own {v:Matthew 6:10}
Before the prayer turns to human needs, it turns to divine purposes:
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
This is a petition for the Kingdom of God — God's reign, his ordering of all things — to break into the present world. It is a prayer that what is true in heaven (perfect obedience, flourishing, right relationship) would become true here. Praying this honestly requires a genuine willingness to participate in that agenda, not merely observe it from a distance.
Provision, Forgiveness, and Deliverance {v:Matthew 6:11-13}
The prayer then moves into three practical petitions.
Daily bread. "Give us today our daily bread" is a request for what we need now, not a stockpile for the future. It cultivates dependence and trust, acknowledging that all provision ultimately comes from God rather than our own effort alone.
Forgiveness. "Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors." The moral weight of this line is impossible to miss: we are asking God to forgive us in the same proportion we extend forgiveness to others. Jesus expands on this immediately after the prayer ends, making clear that an unforgiving heart cannot receive forgiveness freely.
Deliverance. "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." This petition acknowledges our vulnerability to both moral failure and hostile forces beyond ourselves. It is an act of humility — an admission that we cannot navigate the world's dangers on our own strength.
How Christians Use It
Many Christians use the Lord's Prayer in two ways: as a fixed text prayed verbatim (as the early church did, and as liturgical traditions continue to do) and as a template that shapes their own words. Jesus said "pray like this," not necessarily "pray only this." Both approaches have deep roots in Christian practice and neither is wrong.
What Jesus gave his disciples was not a ritual to perform but a lens through which to see every act of prayer: begin with who God is, align yourself with his purposes, bring your genuine needs honestly, and return again to dependence. That pattern has shaped Christian devotion from the first century to today — and it proves just as reliable now as it ever was.
