That's either the worst deal imaginable or the best one — depending entirely on whether you believe God actually keeps his word.

If you want people fully devoted to serving God, you have to be fully committed to supporting them. That principle hasn't changed. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD. It's because of these very practices that the LORD your God is driving those nations out ahead of you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God.
The nations you're displacing — they listen to fortune-tellers and diviners. But the LORD your God has not permitted you to do this."

He wasn't threatened by these practices. He knew they would pull his people away from the only source that's actually trustworthy.
The Prophet Who's Coming 🌟
Right after telling them what NOT to listen to, told them who they should be listening for. And this is the passage that changes everything in the chapter. Moses said:
"The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me, from among your own people — listen to him. This is exactly what you asked for at Horeb, on the day of the assembly, when you said, 'Don't let us hear the voice of the LORD our God directly, and don't let us see that terrifying Fire again — or we'll die.'"
Then Moses told them how God responded:
"The LORD told me, 'They're right. What they've said makes sense. I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their own people. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will speak to them everything I command him. And whoever refuses to listen to the words he speaks in my name — I myself will hold them accountable.'"
Read that again. The people had stood at the base of , heard God's voice like thunder, seen covering the mountain, and said: "We can't survive direct contact with God. We need someone to stand between us." And God didn't rebuke them for it. He said, "You're right. I'll send someone."

"Any Prophet who presumes to speak in my name when I haven't told him to — or who speaks in the name of other gods — that Prophet must die."

"And if you're wondering, 'How do we know whether a message is really from the LORD?' — here's your test: if a Prophet speaks in the LORD's name and the thing doesn't happen or come true, that word wasn't from the LORD. That Prophet spoke on his own presumption. Don't be afraid of him."
That's remarkably clear. God didn't make the test complicated. He didn't say "form a committee" or "trust your gut." He said: did it come true? Yes — take it seriously. No — that person was speaking for themselves, not for God. Move on. Don't be intimidated.
There's something deeply practical here that reaches far beyond ancient . In every generation, people claim to speak for God. They make bold predictions, declare "God told me" with unshakable confidence, and build entire followings around it. And God says: there's a test for that. Words that actually come from me come to pass. You don't have to live in fear of every person who claims divine authority. You can wait and see.
