Galatians 4 — Inheritance, identity, and the freedom you already have

has been building this argument for three chapters. The doesn't come through rule-keeping. It never did. was always the way in — proved it, the confirmed it, and sealed it. Now Paul takes the argument somewhere deeply personal: identity. Who are you, really? Because if you understand what changed when Jesus came, you'll never want to go back.
This chapter moves from legal metaphor to raw emotion to Old Testament allegory — and every piece of it is aimed at the same question: why would someone who's been set free volunteer for chains?
Paul started with an illustration everyone in the ancient world would have understood. When a wealthy father died, his heir might still be a child — technically the owner of everything, but practically no different from a servant in the household. Someone else managed the money. Someone else made the decisions. The kid owned it all and controlled none of it.
Paul applied it directly:
"Here's what I mean — an heir who's still a child is no different from a slave, even though he owns the entire estate. He's under guardians and managers until the date his father set. That was us. When we were spiritually immature, we were enslaved to the basic principles of this world.
But when the perfect moment arrived, God sent his Son — born of a woman, born under — to buy back everyone who was under the . Why? So we could receive as his children.
And because you are his children, God has sent the of his Son right into your hearts — and that Spirit cries out, 'Abba! !'
So you are no longer a slave. You are a son. And if a son, then an heir — through God."
Read that last line again slowly. The distance between "slave" and "heir" is everything. That's not a promotion. That's not a reward for good behavior. That's a complete identity change. You didn't earn your way into the family — God sent his Son to bring you in and his Spirit to confirm it. Every time you pray, the Spirit inside you is already calling God "." That's not something you achieve. It's something that happened to you.
Now Paul's frustration starts showing. He'd spent years pouring into the in , and some of them were drifting back toward religious rule-keeping as if Jesus hadn't changed anything. He couldn't understand it:
"Before you knew God, you were enslaved to things that aren't even gods. But now you know God — or better yet, God knows you. So how can you possibly turn back to those weak and worthless principles? You want to be their slaves all over again?
You're observing special days and months and seasons and years! I'm afraid all my work with you might have been for nothing."
Here's the thing Paul was getting at: the believers in Galatia used to follow pagan rituals and calendars. Now certain teachers were convincing them to follow Jewish ceremonial calendars and regulations as the path to being "real" Christians. And Paul saw it for what it was — trading one form of spiritual slavery for another. The packaging changed but the bondage was the same. You're still letting a system tell you whether you're acceptable instead of trusting what God already declared about you.
It's the same trap in different clothes today. The person who thinks God's approval depends on their quiet time streak. The one who measures their standing with God by how many rules they kept this week. There's a difference between spiritual practices that flow from relationship and religious rituals you perform to earn acceptance. Paul was watching people drift from the first into the second, and it terrified him.
This is where the letter shifts from theological argument to personal appeal. You can almost hear Paul's voice crack:
"Brothers and sisters — please. Become like me, because I became like you. You haven't done anything wrong to me.
You remember how this started. It was because of a physical illness that I ended up preaching the to you in the first place. And even though my condition could have been off-putting to you — you didn't look down on me. You didn't reject me. You received me like an of God. Like himself.
What happened to that you had? I can honestly say you would have torn out your own eyes and given them to me if you could have.
So now — have I become your enemy because I'm telling you the truth?"
That last question lands hard. Think about the people in your life who tell you what you need to hear instead of what you want to hear. The ones who care enough to be honest even when it's uncomfortable. It's one of the most painful things in any relationship — watching someone you love pull away from you specifically because you wouldn't lie to them. Paul wasn't being harsh. He was being honest. And honesty had turned him from their hero into their problem.
Paul pulled back the curtain on the false teachers' strategy. It wasn't complicated — it was just effective:
"These people are paying you a lot of attention, but their motives aren't good. They want to isolate you so that you'll become dependent on them. There's nothing wrong with being valued — as long as it's genuine and it's happening whether I'm there or not.
My children — I am in the pain of childbirth with you all over again, and I will be until Christ is fully formed in you. I wish I could be there right now and change my tone, because honestly — I don't know what to make of what's happening with you."
Paul just described a manipulation playbook that hasn't changed in two thousand years. Someone showers you with attention and affirmation — but it's strategic. The goal isn't your growth. The goal is your loyalty. They build you up so you'll need them. It happens in religious communities, in friendships, in workplaces. The affection feels real, but the agenda is control.
And then there's Paul's response — comparing himself to a mother in labor. That's not a casual metaphor. He was saying: I already went through the agony of bringing you to faith once. Now I'm going through it again because you're being reshaped by the wrong people. The urgency in these verses isn't anger. It's love that refuses to watch someone self-destruct quietly.
Now Paul did something unexpected. He went back to the story the Galatians' new teachers kept pointing to — story — and used it to make the exact opposite point they were making:
"Alright, you want to be under the ? Then actually listen to what the says.
had two sons. One was born to a slave woman — Hagar. The other was born to a free woman — . The slave woman's son was born through ordinary human effort. The free woman's son was born through God's promise.
Here's the deeper meaning: these two women represent two . Hagar represents the from — and her children are born into slavery. Hagar corresponds to the present , because Jerusalem and her children are currently in bondage.
But the Jerusalem above is free — and she is our mother.
As the says: 'Rejoice, you who never bore children! Break out in celebration, you who never went through labor! Because the desolate woman will have more children than the woman who has a husband.'"
This is a bold move. Paul took the story his opponents were using to say "you need to follow the Jewish " and flipped it completely. He said: sure, let's talk about Abraham. He had two sons. One came from human striving and produced slavery. One came from God's promise and produced . Which one do you want to be?
The whole allegory hinges on a simple question: are you trying to produce something through your own effort, or are you receiving what God already promised? The -keepers were Hagar's children — born from human effort, living under obligation. Believers in Christ were Sarah's children — born from promise, living in .
Paul brought it home with one clean, decisive conclusion:
"You, brothers and sisters — like — are children of the promise. And just like it was back then, the one born through human effort persecuted the one born through the Spirit. It's still happening now.
But what does say? 'Send away the slave woman and her son, because the slave woman's son will not share the with the free woman's son.'
So here it is, brothers and sisters: we are not children of the slave woman. We are children of the free woman."
That's the whole chapter in one sentence. You are not children of slavery. You are children of . Not because you earned it. Not because you followed enough rules. Because God made a promise, and fulfilled it, and the sealed it in your heart.
The persecution piece matters too. Paul acknowledged that choosing promise over performance will always provoke resistance — especially from people who've built their identity on the performance system. It happened to Isaac. It happened to the Galatians. It still happens. The person who rests in will always unsettle the person who's still trying to earn it. That tension isn't a sign something's wrong. It's a sign something's right.
