"Heaven is my throne. The earth is my footstool. So what kind of house could you possibly build for me? Where exactly would I rest?

But here is the one I'm drawn to: the person who is humble, whose spirit is broken open, who trembles at my word."

"The one who slaughters an ox — it's no different from someone who kills a man. The one who Sacrifices a lamb — like someone who breaks a dog's neck. The one who brings a Grain Offering — like offering pig's blood. The one who burns frankincense — like blessing an Idol.
They've chosen their own ways. Their souls actually delight in their abominations. So I will choose harsh treatment for them. I will bring their deepest fears upon them — because when I called, no one answered. When I spoke, they did not listen. They did what was evil in my eyes and chose the things I take no delight in."
This is devastating. These weren't atheists. These were people doing all the right religious things — , , rituals, attendance. But none of it was connected to an actual relationship with God. The motions without the meaning. And God says the performance isn't just useless — it's offensive. He'd rather have someone whose spirit is genuinely broken than someone whose attendance record is perfect. You can show up every week, say the right things, check every religious box — and still be completely disconnected from what God actually cares about.
A Word for the Ones They Pushed Out 🛡️
Then God turned his attention to the faithful — the ones who had been cast aside precisely because they took God seriously:
"Listen — you who actually tremble at my word. Your own brothers hate you. They've pushed you out because of my name. They've mocked you, saying, 'Let the Lord be glorified! Let's see if he shows up for you!'
But they are the ones who will be put to shame.
That uproar from the city? That sound from the Temple? That is the sound of the Lord — paying back his enemies."
Think about how isolating it is to be rejected by your own community for doing the right thing. These weren't outsiders being mistreated by strangers. "Would I bring something to the point of birth and then not deliver it? Would I — the one who causes life to come forth — shut the womb?"
And then the invitation:
"Rejoice with Jerusalem! Be glad for her, all of you who Love her! Celebrate with real Joy, all of you who've been mourning over her — so that you can nurse and be completely satisfied from her comforting presence, so that you can drink deeply from her overflowing abundance."
The image is extraordinary. God was that wouldn't be a slow, painful rebuilding process. It would be sudden. Miraculous. Like a baby arriving before the labor even begins. After centuries of waiting — , devastation, silence — the new thing would come so fast it would defy explanation. "I know their works and their thoughts. And the time is coming when I will gather all nations and every language. They will come and see my Glory.

And some of them — from the nations — I will take as Priests and Levites, says the Lord."
