Romans 4 — Abraham, faith before rules, and a righteousness nobody earned

has just spent three chapters building an airtight case: everyone — Jewish, , religious, irreligious — stands guilty before God. No one earns their way in. So if the whole system isn't about performance, what IS it about? Paul does something brilliant here. He doesn't reach for a new argument. He reaches back to the most respected figure in Jewish history: .
And what he finds in Abraham's story isn't what most of his readers expected. Because the receipt — the moment God declared Abraham — was stamped long before Abraham did anything to deserve it. That single fact reshapes everything.
Paul started with the person no one could argue with. Abraham was the . The founding . The gold standard of Jewish identity. So Paul asked the obvious question — what exactly did Abraham gain by his own effort?
Paul wrote:
"What did actually gain through his own works? If he earned his standing with God through effort, sure, he'd have something to brag about. But not before God. Because here's what actually says: 'Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as .'
Think about it this way. When you work a , your paycheck isn't a gift — it's what you're owed. But when someone who hasn't earned anything simply trusts the God who declares the guilty 'not guilty' — that is what gets counted as ."
Then Paul pulled in a second witness. — king, poet, and someone who knew failure intimately — said the same thing:
"Blessed are those whose wrongs are forgiven, whose are covered. Blessed is the person whose sin the Lord will never hold against them."
Here's what Paul was doing. He was separating two things people constantly confuse: earning and receiving. A paycheck is earned — it's a transaction. A gift is received — it's relational. And — being declared right with God — has always been a gift. Even for Abraham. Even for David. The two towering figures of Jewish history didn't earn their standing. They received it. That should change how you think about your own.
Now Paul anticipated the next objection. Okay, fine — but this blessing is for the right people, right? The insiders? The ones with the proper credentials?
Paul wrote:
"So is this blessing only for the circumcised? Or also for the uncircumcised? Let's go back to the timeline. We say was counted to as . But when did that happen? Before or after he was circumcised?
It was before. Not after. He received later — as a sign, a seal on the he already had by faith while he was still uncircumcised.
And here's the purpose: so that he would be the of everyone who believes without being circumcised — so would be credited to them too — and also the of the circumcised who don't just carry the sign but actually walk in the same faith Abraham had before the sign existed."
This is a timeline argument, and it's devastating. God declared Abraham in Genesis 15. didn't happen until Genesis 17. That's years apart. Which means — the very sign that marked insiders from outsiders — came after the blessing, not before it. The credential didn't produce the relationship. The relationship produced the credential. That distinction matters more than most people realize. Because it means the door was always wider than anyone thought.
Paul pressed deeper. If comes through , what about the promise itself? The one where God told his family would inherit the world?
Paul wrote:
"The promise to Abraham and his descendants — that they would be heirs of the world — didn't come through . It came through the of faith. Because if people who follow the are the only heirs, then faith means nothing and the promise is hollow.
The produces consequences. Where there's no , there's no violation. That's exactly why it depends on faith — so the promise can rest on . So it's guaranteed to all of Abraham's descendants. Not just the ones who have the , but also the ones who share the faith Abraham had.
He is the of all of us. As it's written: 'I have made you the of many nations.' And this is in the presence of the God he believed in — the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that don't exist into existence."
Here's the logic: if the promise depends on rule-following, it's fragile. One slip and it breaks. But if the promise depends on grace, received through faith, then it's guaranteed — because it rests on God's character, not yours. Paul was saying the engine that powers the whole thing was never human performance. It was always divine generosity. And a promise anchored to God's faithfulness is a promise that can't fail.
That last line is stunning, by the way. God "calls things that don't exist into existence." He doesn't work with what's already there. He creates from nothing. Keep that in mind for what comes next.
This is where the story gets personal. Paul zoomed in on what actually looked like in life — and it wasn't comfortable or easy.
Paul wrote:
"Against all , Abraham believed in — that he would become the of many nations, just as God had told him: 'So shall your offspring be.'
He didn't weaken in faith when he faced the facts — his own body, practically dead at nearly a hundred years old, and womb, which had never produced a child. He didn't waver in unbelief at God's promise. Instead, he grew stronger in his faith, giving glory to God, fully convinced that what God had promised, God was able to deliver.
That's why it was counted to him as ."
Look at what Paul didn't say. He didn't say Abraham ignored reality. He didn't say Abraham pretended the situation was fine. Abraham "considered" his body. He looked at the facts. He was almost a hundred. Sarah had never been able to have children. Every piece of evidence said this was impossible. And Abraham believed anyway. Not because he was naive. Because he knew who made the promise.
That's what faith actually is. It's not pretending the hard things aren't real. It's deciding that the God behind the promise is more real than the obstacles in front of you. Abraham had decades of waiting, doubt, and silence. He even made mistakes along the way. But the core posture held: God said it. God can do it. I'll trust him.
Paul closed with a move that brings the whole chapter home. This wasn't just ancient history. This was always meant for the people reading it — including you.
Paul wrote:
"The words 'it was counted to him' weren't written just for Abraham's sake. They were written for us. It will be counted to us — the ones who believe in the God who raised our Lord from the dead.
Jesus, who was handed over because of our failures, and raised to life for our ."
That's the payoff. The whole chapter — Abraham's faith, the timeline, the promise, the impossible pregnancy — all of it was pointing here. The same pattern that worked for Abraham works for everyone who trusts the God who raised Jesus. You believe. God credits. Not because you earned it. Because he promised it.
And notice the final line. Jesus wasn't just handed over for your sin. He was raised for your justification. The isn't an epilogue — it's the proof that the transaction went through. The debt was paid. The verdict came back. And it reads: not guilty.
