Weren't these the same words the Lord proclaimed through the earlier prophets, back when Jerusalem was still thriving and prosperous, with her surrounding cities inhabited, and the southern hills and lowlands full of people?"

That's a devastating question. Because the honest answer — for most of them — was probably no. The fasting had become routine. A calendar event. Something you did because you'd always done it, not because it was shaping your heart toward God. And God pointed out the obvious: when you eat, you eat for yourselves. "When I called, they wouldn't listen. So when they called, I wouldn't listen. I scattered them like a whirlwind among nations they'd never known. The land they left behind became desolate — no one coming, no one going. The pleasant land was made empty."
This is one of the most honest descriptions of spiritual hardening in the Bible. It wasn't a single moment of rebellion. It was a process. They refused to pay attention — that's step one. They turned away — step two. They covered their ears — step three. And finally, they made their hearts so hard that nothing could penetrate. Diamond-hard. Impenetrable by design.
And the result? A perfect, terrible symmetry. They wouldn't hear God, so God wouldn't hear them. Not because he was petty. Because that's how relationship works. You can't spend decades refusing to listen and then expect the line to be open the moment you finally need something. The land they'd taken for granted — the "pleasant land" — was left completely empty.
