After Saul's death and years of civil war, all twelve tribes finally united under David — and he made Jerusalem his capital.
When Saul and Jonathan fell in battle, David mourned them deeply and composed a famous lament. But the kingdom split — Judah crowned David while Saul's son Ish-Bosheth ruled the northern tribes. After years of conflict and political assassinations, the northern tribes came to David at Hebron and made him king over all Israel. His first major act was capturing the Jebusite stronghold of Jerusalem and making it his capital city.
A messenger arrives with news that Saul and Jonathan are dead. David's response is the opposite of what everyone expected — not celebration, but devastation. Then he writes one of the most beautiful grief songs in all of Scripture.
2 SamuelA Kingdom Divided Before It Even StartsDavid finally gets his crown — but only over half the nation. Saul's old general installs a puppet king over the rest of Israel, and what starts as a "friendly competition" between soldiers turns into a brutal civil war that costs one young man everything.
2 SamuelThe Deal That Died in the DoorwayWhen Abner defects to David and brokers a deal to end the civil war, peace is finally within reach — until Joab murders him in a doorway, disguising revenge as justice. A chapter about what happens when the people closest to you do damage you can't undo, in your name, without your permission.
2 SamuelThe Reward Nobody ExpectedWith Abner dead, Saul's last surviving son loses his nerve — and two opportunists decide to take matters into their own hands. They bring David a gruesome trophy expecting a promotion. They get something very different.
2 SamuelThe King Everyone Finally WantedAfter years of waiting, every tribe in Israel finally comes to David and says what God said all along — you're our king. Then he does the impossible, takes an "unconquerable" city, and wins two battles by listening before he fights.
