God sent Samuel to anoint a new king — not any of seven impressive older brothers, but the youngest one out watching sheep.
God directed Samuel to the house of Jesse in Bethlehem. Jesse presented seven sons, and God rejected every one. When Samuel asked if there were any others, Jesse mentioned the youngest was out tending sheep. David came in, and God said, 'This is the one.' Meanwhile, Saul was tormented by a distressing spirit, and David was brought to court as a musician to soothe him — completely unaware he was serving the king he would replace.
