David defeats the Aramean coalition of Hadadezer of Zobah and carries home from Tibhath and Cun the enormous quantity of bronze that Solomon will later forge into the Sea, the pillars Jachin and Boaz, and the vessels of the temple.
1 Chronicles 18 (paralleled in 2 Samuel 8) chronicles a series of campaigns by which David consolidated control of the Levant, fighting the Philistines south, Moab east, Edom southeast, the Ammonites east, and the Aramean coalition headed by Hadadezer king of Zobah to the north. The decisive northern engagement came when David defeated Hadadezer's army by the river Euphrates and pursued the surviving forces westward through Aram. The campaign records list 22,000 Syrians slain at Damascus when the Arameans came to Hadadezer's aid, and the placement of Israelite garrisons throughout Syria.
David defeats nation after nation, captures enormous wealth, and then does the last thing any ancient king would do — he gives all of it away. This chapter is a case study in what leadership looks like when the leader genuinely believes the victories aren't his.
2 SamuelThe Season Where Everything WorkedDavid goes on the most dominant military run in Israel's history — defeating enemies on every side, collecting tribute from nations, and dedicating everything back to God. Then we get a snapshot of his cabinet, and it's the picture of a kingdom actually working the way it was supposed to.
