Officials throw Jeremiah into a muddy cistern to die, but an unlikely rescuer pulls him out.
Jeremiah's message that Jerusalem should surrender to Babylon makes the officials furious. They throw him into a cistern with no water — just mud at the bottom — and leave him to die. An Ethiopian court official named Ebed-Melech risks his own position to petition the king, then uses old rags and ropes to carefully pull Jeremiah out of the mud.
