After forty years of leading Israel, Moses loses his temper at Meribah, strikes the rock instead of speaking to it — and forfeits his entry into the Promised Land.
At Meribah near Kadesh, the people again complain bitterly about the lack of water. God tells Moses to speak to the rock in front of the community, promising water will pour out. But Moses is furious — he calls the people rebels and demands to know whether he and Aaron must produce water for them — and strikes the rock twice with his staff. Water still gushes out, but God renders a sobering verdict. Because Moses failed to treat God as holy in the sight of the people, neither he nor Aaron will lead Israel into the land. After everything Moses has carried, this single moment of anger costs him the finish line. The psalms return to this incident as a warning against hardening the heart against God (Psalm 95:8; 106:32-33).
