In 490 BCE, a smaller Athenian force defeats the Persian invasion army at Marathon — proving that the mighty Persian Empire can be beaten.
When Darius I sends a punitive expedition to crush Athens for supporting a revolt in Persian-controlled Ionia, the Athenians meet the invaders on the plain of Marathon with roughly 10,000 soldiers against a larger Persian force. The Greek hoplite charge breaks the Persian lines, killing around 6,400 Persians against only 192 Athenian dead. According to legend, a runner sprints 26 miles to Athens with the news — the origin of the modern marathon race.
