After Ramesses XI dies around 1070 BCE, Egypt splits between pharaohs ruling from Tanis in the north and high priests of Amun controlling Thebes in the south. By the 900s BCE, Libyan dynasties hold the throne. Egypt's weakness during this era helps explain why Israel and its neighbors can thrive without Egyptian interference.
