After the Bronze Age collapse wiped out Mycenaean civilization around 1200 BCE, Greece enters centuries of decline — lost literacy, shrinking populations, minimal trade. By the 900s BCE, recovery accelerates. Population grows, trade resumes, and communities like Athens, Corinth, and Sparta begin organizing into the poleis that will define Greek civilization.
