Foreign rulers called the Hyksos seize control of northern Egypt, possibly creating the political conditions that allowed a Hebrew like Joseph to rise to power.
Around 1650 BCE, a Semitic people known as the Hyksos ('rulers of foreign lands') took control of the Nile Delta and established their capital at Avaris. They introduced horse-drawn chariots and composite bows to Egypt. Their willingness to elevate fellow Semites to positions of authority may explain how a foreigner like Joseph could become second-in-command of Egypt.
