By 1900 BCE, the Minoans had constructed elaborate multi-story palaces on Crete, with Knossos being the largest and most impressive. The complex featured indoor plumbing, colorful frescoes, and massive storage facilities. The Minoans developed their own writing systems — hieroglyphic and later Linear A — and dominated Mediterranean trade networks.
