Around 1200 BCE, the Olmec civilization arose in the tropical lowlands of Mexico — the earliest known major civilization in Mesoamerica.
The Olmecs built impressive ceremonial centers at San Lorenzo and later La Venta, complete with massive stone head sculptures that still captivate visitors today. They developed early forms of writing, a calendar system, and a ball game that would persist in Mesoamerican cultures for millennia. Their influence shaped every major civilization that followed in the region.
