Ramesses III fought off a massive seaborne invasion by the Sea Peoples around 1178 BCE — one of the ancient world's most dramatic military victories.
The Sea Peoples were a coalition of maritime raiders whose exact origins are still debated. They had already destroyed the Hittites and ravaged the Levantine coast. Ramesses III defeated them in a great land and naval battle recorded in vivid reliefs at Medinet Habu. Egypt survived, but was permanently weakened.
