Ancient Britons began building Stonehenge, a monument that would take over a thousand years to complete.
The earliest phase of Stonehenge — a circular ditch and bank — dates to around 3000 BCE. Over the following centuries, builders transported massive bluestones from Wales (150 miles away) and erected the iconic sarsen stone circle. How Neolithic people moved 25-ton stones without wheels or metal tools remains one of archaeology's most fascinating puzzles.
