A massive destruction event at Tall el-Hammam in the Jordan Valley may correspond to the biblical account of Sodom's destruction.
Archaeological excavations at Tall el-Hammam, a thriving Bronze Age city near the Dead Sea, reveal a catastrophic destruction layer dated to around 1650 BCE. The site shows evidence of extreme heat — pottery with melted surfaces and mudbrick turned to glass. A 2021 study in Nature Scientific Reports suggested a cosmic airburst, similar to the Tunguska event. Whether this is the biblical Sodom remains debated, but the evidence of sudden, violent destruction is undeniable.
