An Aramean victory inscription contains the earliest known reference to the 'House of David' outside the Bible.
Discovered in 1993 at the ancient site of Tel Dan in northern Israel, this fragmented basalt inscription was likely erected by King Hazael of Aram-Damascus. The phrase 'House of David' confirmed that David's dynasty was recognized by neighboring kingdoms within about a century of his reign. It transformed the scholarly debate about David's historicity overnight.
