David came home to find Ziklag burned, his family kidnapped, and his own men ready to stone him — then he chased down the raiders and recovered everything.
While David and his 600 men were marching with the Philistine army (Achish had planned to bring them into the battle against Saul before the other Philistine commanders forced their dismissal), Amalekite raiders torched Ziklag and carried off every wife, child, and animal — including David's wives Ahinoam and Abigail. David's grief-stricken men talked of stoning him. David asked God whether to pursue and received clear direction to go. With 400 men (200 were too exhausted to cross the Besor ravine and guarded the supplies), David tracked the raiders through an abandoned Egyptian slave and attacked at dusk. The fight lasted from twilight to the evening of the next day. David recovered everyone and everything — and then ruled that the 200 supply guards would receive an equal share of the spoil. He also sent gifts of plunder to the elders of Judah, the alliance that would soon crown him king.
David is marching into battle alongside the Philistines — against his own people — when the Philistine commanders refuse to let him fight. What looks like rejection turns out to be the most perfectly timed exit ramp in history. delivered by the last people he'd ever expect.
1 SamuelThe Day Everything BurnedDavid comes home to find everything destroyed and everyone gone. His own men talk about killing him. But instead of falling apart, he turns to God, chases down the enemy, recovers everything — and then does something with the victory that changes Israel forever.
