After his betrayal of the prophet Zechariah son of Jehoiada King Joash of Judah is assassinated by his own servants Jozachar son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer at the house of Millo on the descent to Silla in Jerusalem — closing the apostate end of a reign that began with Temple renewal.
2 Kings 12:19-21 (parallel 2 Chronicles 24:25-27) records the assassination of King Joash of Judah after his late-reign apostasy: "His servants arose, and made a conspiracy, and slew Joash in the house of Millo, which goeth down to Silla. For Jozachar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, that he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David." The conspiracy avenged Joash's execution of the prophet Zechariah son of Jehoiada, who had publicly denounced the king for forsaking the Lord — sealing the spiritual collapse of a reign that began with the great Temple renewal under the high priest Jehoiada.
A young king tries to fix the Temple, but the priests keep collecting money without doing the work. So he invents a new system — and it actually works. Then an enemy shows up, and the king pays him off with everything sacred.
2 ChroniclesThe King Who Forgot Who Saved HimJoash becomes king at seven years old and does incredible things — restoring the Temple, rallying the nation, rebuilding what was broken. But the moment his mentor dies, everything unravels. This chapter is a masterclass in what happens when your faith depends on someone else's.
