A serpent's deception leads Adam and Eve to eat the one fruit God forbade, and everything changes.
The serpent convinces Eve that eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil won't bring death but will make them like God. She eats and shares the fruit with Adam. Their eyes are opened to their nakedness, they hide from God, and the consequences cascade — pain in childbirth, toil in work, and banishment from the garden. God also makes the first promise of a future deliverer who will crush the serpent.
