Within the distribution of the forty-eight Levitical cities the Aaronide priests received three towns inside Simeons Negev territory — Ain Juttah and Beth-shemesh — extending the priesthood into the far southern frontier.
Joshua 21:9-16 records the Aaronide allotment of Levitical cities within the tribes of Judah and Simeon: "And they gave them Kirjath-arba, the father of Anak, which city is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof... and Libnah with her suburbs, and Jattir with her suburbs, and Eshtemoa with her suburbs, And Holon, Debir, Ain, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh." Ain — a settlement built around a natural spring on the arid southern frontier — was one of the three southern Aaronide cities that extended the priesthood into Simeon's Negev territory. The arrangement gave priests within walking distance of every Israelite settlement, from the far-southern Negev to the northern Galilee.
