When the forty-eight Levitical cities were distributed, the northern tribes of Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali contributed Kishion, Daberath, Jokneam, Kartah, Nahalal, Kedesh, and Hammoth-dor — giving the Gershonite and Merarite branches of the Levites their share of the Galilee.
Joshua 21:27-35 records how the northern tribes of Issachar, Zebulun, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan contributed Levitical cities for the Gershonite and Merarite branches of the Levitical tribe. The Gershonites received from Issachar: Kishion, Daberath, Jarmuth, and En-gannim — four cities with their pasture lands. From Asher they received Mishal, Abdon, Helkath, and Rehob. From Naphtali they received Kedesh in Galilee (the city of refuge), Hammoth-dor, and Kartan — three cities with their pasture lands. The Merarites received from Zebulun: Jokneam, Kartah, Dimnah, and Nahalal. From Reuben they received Bezer (also a city of refuge), Jahzah, Kedemoth, and Mephaath. From Gad they received Ramoth in Gilead (city of refuge), Mahanaim, Heshbon, and Jazer. The careful catalogue ensures that the Levites who had no inherited tribal territory of their own were nevertheless scattered throughout every region of the land to teach the law, sing in the temple choirs, and serve at the great festivals.
The Levites — the one tribe deliberately left without a territory — finally receive forty-eight cities scattered across the entire nation. It reads like an ancient spreadsheet, but the system underneath it is brilliant. And the way the chapter ends will stop you in your tracks.
1 ChroniclesThe Tribe That Carried the PresenceWhat looks like a wall of unpronounceable names is actually a blueprint for how God embedded the knowledge of himself into every corner of a nation. This chapter maps the Levite family tree — priests, worship leaders, and the forty-eight cities they were scattered across — revealing that the people holding everything together are often the ones no one thinks to put on the poster.
