Ezekiels lament for Tyre catalogs the foreign rowers wisemen merchants and warriors who served the great merchant city — including the men of Arvad on the walls the elders of Gebal at the seams and the Gammadim in the towers.
Ezekiel 27 catalogs the foreign allies who staffed Tyre's defenses and crewed her ships: "They of Persia and of Lud and of Phut were in thine army, thy men of war: they hanged the shield and helmet in thee; they set forth thy comeliness. The men of Arvad with thine army were upon thy walls round about, and the Gammadims were in thy towers: they hanged their shields upon thy walls round about; they have made thy beauty perfect" (Ezekiel 27:10-11). The international roster — Arvadites, Gammadim, Persians, Lydians, Libyans — testifies to Tyre's reach as the great middleman of the eastern Mediterranean.
