The tribes of Reuben and Gad come to Moses with a controversial proposal — give them the lush Transjordan pasturelands of Jazer Nimrah Heshbon Elealeh and Nebo for their massive herds rather than the western Promised Land — and Moses accepts only on condition they fight alongside the other tribes in the western conquest.
Numbers 32:1-5 narrates the Reubenite-Gadite petition for the Transjordan pasturelands: "Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle... they spake unto Moses, saying, Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon, Even the country which the Lord smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle: Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession." Moses initially feared a second spy-style rebellion but accepted on the condition that they cross the Jordan and fight alongside the other tribes.
