Moabite tableland town paired with Heshbon — wept over by both Isaiah and Jeremiah
MoabHistorically Verified
Identified with el-Al about a mile northeast of modern Hesban in Jordan. The Arabic place name preserves the biblical form, and Iron Age remains have been documented.
A Moabite town on the tableland east of the Jordan, paired in scripture with neighboring Heshbon. The tribes of Reuben and Gad asked for it as inheritance because of its rich pasturage (Numbers 32:3, 37). Reuben rebuilt and resettled it. Centuries later it had reverted to Moab, and the prophetic laments for Moab in Isaiah and Jeremiah call out Elealeh by name — "Heshbon and Elealeh cry out" — bringing the prophets themselves to tears over its coming destruction (Isaiah 15:4; 16:9; Jeremiah 48:34).
