Humanity bands together to build a tower reaching heaven, so God scatters them by confusing their languages.
With one language and a shared ambition, people settle on a plain in Shinar and start building a city with a tower to the sky. Their goal is to make a name for themselves and avoid being scattered. God comes down, sees the project, and confuses their speech so they can no longer understand each other. The construction stops, the people scatter across the earth, and the place gets named Babel — because God 'babbled' their language there.
