Zechariah 9 opens with the great oracle "The burden of the word of the Lord in the land of Hadrach and Damascus" sweeping south through Hamath Tyre Sidon Ashkelon Gaza Ekron and Ashdod.
Zechariah 9 opens with one of the most geographically sweeping foreign-nation oracles in the prophetic books: "The burden of the word of the Lord in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall be the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the Lord. And Hamath also shall border thereby; Tyrus, and Zidon, though it be very wise" (Zechariah 9:1-2). The catalog continues south through the Philistine pentapolis (Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, Ashdod) before pivoting to the great messianic prophecy of the king coming "lowly, and riding upon an ass" (Zech 9:9) — fulfilled in Jesus's triumphal entry to Jerusalem.
