Raised structures for sacrifice and worship — markers of encounters with God

Definition

Altars were built from stone or earth as places of sacrifice and memorial. The patriarchs built altars to mark divine encounters. The tabernacle and Temple had specific altars for burnt offerings and incense. False altars to other gods were repeatedly condemned.
