One of the "Blessed are..." statements Jesus made in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3-12)
From the Latin 'beatitudo' (blessedness). Jesus opens his most famous sermon with eight declarations about who is truly blessed — and the list surprises everyone. The poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek, the persecuted. It's a complete inversion of what the world considers blessed. Each beatitude pairs a present condition with a future promise.
